…Launch Skills Acquisition Programme to Build Financial Independence for Spouses of Junior Officers

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening the economic resilience of police families with the launch of a skills acquisition and empowerment programme for spouses of junior police officers.

The initiative, organised by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) in partnership with the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), was unveiled on at the MD Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja, under the theme: “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment.”

Designed to equip beneficiaries with vocational skills and business start-up support, the programme seeks to expand income-generating opportunities for police families, promote financial independence and improve household livelihoods.

Speaking at the launch, IGP Disu described economic empowerment as an essential component of police welfare, noting that the well-being of officers is closely tied to the stability of their families.

He said supporting the spouses of junior officers with practical skills and opportunities for enterprise would not only improve family welfare but also contribute to a more motivated and productive workforce.

The Inspector-General commended the sacrifices and resilience of police spouses, urging beneficiaries to regard the training and empowerment packages as tools for building sustainable businesses and securing long-term financial stability.

In his keynote address, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mr. Mohammed Sheidu, said the programme demonstrates the Fund’s commitment to investing in people as well as infrastructure.

He noted that beyond improving operational capacity within the Nigeria Police Force, empowering police families economically helps build stronger households and more resilient communities.

According to him, the vocational training and business start-up packs are intended to provide beneficiaries with practical skills and the resources needed to establish viable enterprises capable of generating sustainable income.

Also speaking, the National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of police families.

She said empowering spouses financially strengthens the home front, enhances officers’ morale and ultimately contributes to more effective policing.

Mrs. Disu reaffirmed POWA’s commitment to partnering with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to expand economic opportunities for police families and urged other government agencies, development partners and corporate organisations to support similar empowerment initiatives.

The programme marks the first large-scale economic empowerment initiative specifically targeted at spouses of junior police officers and underscores the shared commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund and POWA to building financially resilient police families through sustainable skills development and entrepreneurship.
