IGP Disu, Burna Boy Explore Creative Industry’s Role in Rebuilding Police-Youth Relations

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and Nigerian music star Burna Boy have explored how the creative industry can help strengthen relations between the Nigeria Police Force and young Nigerians.

The discussion focused on possible collaboration between the Police and the entertainment industry, recognising the influence of music, popular culture and prominent public voices in shaping conversations among young people.

At the meeting, IGP Disu emphasised the importance of partnerships as part of efforts to reposition the Nigeria Police Force and build stronger connections with the communities it serves.

He also highlighted the potential of the Orange Economy, noting that the creative sector could provide opportunities for young Nigerians while creating new platforms for engagement between the Police and the public.

Burna Boy expressed support for the direction of the engagement and indicated his willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at strengthening the relationship between the Police and Nigerians, particularly the younger generation.

The conversation reflects a growing recognition that effective policing involves more than law enforcement alone. Engagement with communities, young people, the media, civil society and influential voices within popular culture can also shape how security institutions interact with the public.

Music and entertainment occupy a particularly significant space in Nigeria’s youth culture. Artists with large followings can reach audiences in ways that conventional institutional communication may not, creating opportunities for conversations around citizenship, public safety, responsible behaviour and community relations.

For the Police, such partnerships could provide another channel for engaging young Nigerians beyond traditional law-enforcement settings.

The meeting also places the creative sector within the wider conversation around the Orange Economy, where culture, entertainment and other creative enterprises are increasingly viewed not only as sources of economic opportunity but also as platforms for social engagement.

The engagement between Disu and Burna Boy brought together two very different spheres of Nigerian public life—the security establishment and the entertainment industry—with a common interest in reaching a younger and increasingly influential generation.

The broader objective will be to turn such engagements into practical initiatives that can improve communication, encourage constructive interaction and create stronger links between the Police and the communities they serve.

For the Nigeria Police Force, the significance of the conversation will ultimately lie not in the meeting itself, but in what follows from it.
