The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has called for stronger collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to improve police communication and strengthen public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.

Disu made the call on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, when he received a delegation of the NIPR, led by its President and Chairman of Council, Dr Ike Neliaku, fnipr, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The IGP said the Police and the public relations profession share a responsibility to build public confidence through professionalism, transparency, fairness and effective communication.

He emphasised that every police officer is an image-maker of the Force, noting that the conduct of personnel in their daily interactions with citizens directly influences public perception of policing.

Disu reiterated the Force’s commitment to policing by consent and a service-oriented policing culture anchored on professionalism, empathy, accountability and respect for human rights.

He also sought the support of the NIPR in providing specialised communication training for police personnel and developing a coherent messaging framework capable of better communicating the sacrifices, dedication and contributions of police officers to public safety and national security.

Earlier, the NIPR President briefed the IGP on Nigeria’s hosting of the 2026 World Public Relations Forum and Africa Charter Forum, scheduled to take place at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. The event is expected to attract more than 3,000 delegates from 126 member countries of the Global Alliance for Public Relations.

The NIPR delegation sought the support of the Nigeria Police Force for security planning and coverage during the international forum, while also inviting the IGP to serve as a keynote speaker and encouraging police officers to participate as registered delegates.

The engagement highlights the growing importance of strategic communication to modern policing, where public confidence can influence cooperation between citizens and law enforcement, including information sharing, community engagement and support for crime prevention efforts.

The Nigeria Police Force and NIPR are expected to explore areas of professional collaboration aimed at improving police communication, strengthening public understanding of policing and advancing public trust in the Force.
